It probably looks like @lucalocatelliphoto took this photo of Mecca’s Grand Mosque from the air. But he was actually standing inside a Grand Royal Suite at the Fairmont Makkah Clock Royal Tower, nearby. In the days before rapid sea or air travel, it could take months to travel to Mecca. Last year, though, 3 million pilgrims traveled to the city’s sacred center for the hajj, and 5 million more visited for the umrah, a minor pilgrimage that can be made for much of the year. To accommodate a growing influx of pilgrims, Mecca has changed dramatically. The ancient hills, the old stone homes and many of the sites linked to the life of the Prophet Muhammad have been obliterated by towering shopping malls, hotels and apartment blocks. Luxury hotels market views of the holiest site of Islam as the “Haram view” and “Kaaba view.” For instance, the Fairmont suite where @lucalocatelliphoto took this photo can run up to $10,000 a night.
