Last August, an argument erupted in the parking lot of an apartment complex in Orlando, Florida. In a matter of seconds, 15 shots were fired. Victor Hernandez, 10, heard the ruckus and looked out to see what was happening. At that instant, a bullet flew through his bedroom window. Family members said the bullet struck Victor in the left eye, which surgeons have removed to prevent the spread of an infection that could have rendered him blind. No arrest has been made in the shooting. Fearing another attack, the Perez family quickly moved out. When reached by phone, Victor’s grandmother said only this: “I do not want to remember that day.” @jacoblangston took this photo of children playing near the building where Victor was shot. Last year, there were 1,792 shooting casualties in the United States. @ニューヨーク・タイムズ turned to some of the 100-plus innocent bystanders among those casualties.
