A view of the Sterling Highway, which connects Homer, Alaska with Anchorage. The drive from Homer to Anchorage — or vice versa — covers a wonderful area, and it can be done fairly frugally. Much of the entertainment is free, in the form of stunning natural beauty. Lucas Peterson (@staletwizzlers), who writes the @nytimestravel Frugal Traveler column, visited both cities. In Anchorage, he found hiking, biking, wildlife and so much natural beauty it borders on embarrassing. The city’s diverse population gives it a multicultural feel unlike any in the “Lower 48” — a term Alaskans use only slightly derisively to refer to the mainland states. One warning from @staletwizzlers: expect to pay a premium on certain items — after all, the avocados and citrus you enjoy eating need to be shipped quite a ways. @joshuacorbettphotography took this photo of the Sterling Highway while on assignment for @nytimestravel.
