Rod Reeves, 42, right, spoke to a neighbor after a shooting occurred outside his home on Chicago’s South Side over Memorial Day weekend. On Saturday night, stray bullets punctured Rod’s garden hose, creating a large puddle on the sidewalk nearby. Rod says he and his family ducked behind a brick wall in their home to avoid stray shots when gunfire broke out on his block. “I guess it’s good to have a brick house,” he says. Since the start of the year, Chicagoans have called the police 28,000 times to report gunfire. Some are multiple calls about a single shooting and others turn out to be fireworks, but the possibility of being shot leaves its mark, even beyond those killed and wounded.
