For most of @mitskileaks’s childhood, she and her family were on the move, living in 13 countries because of her father’s job. Her teenage years were defined by wild edges that she acknowledges but declines to detail. But music, she said, grounded her, and convinced her she should press forward. “Not to be cheesy, but I do think music helped me not die,” the 25-year-old told @ニューヨーク・タイムズ music critic @joncaramanica last month. “Maybe this is a made-up belief to preserve myself, but I do believe that everyone has a purpose, and my purpose is to put out music that means something.” @damonwinter photographed @mitskileaks in @prospect_park. Her 4th album, “Puberty 2” — an impressive collection of DIY punk and indie rock, her most expansive work yet — is due out on June 17.
