The biologist Tom French has an unusual proposal: Seed a new colony of endangered snakes on a 3.5-mile uninhabited island called Mount Zion in the middle of the Quabbin Reservoir, in the center of Massachusetts. Where better to bring the timber rattlesnake, he thought, so it could thrive away from existential threats like car tires and humans? The major problem for locals, though, is that the island is not exactly an island — it’s connected to the mainland by causeways and another island. Snakes also happen to be excellent swimmers. And perhaps most significantly, many people just don’t like snakes. The debate now roaring in Massachusetts highlights the difficulty of protecting unpopular species, especially those that aren’t cute and the cuddly. While on assignment at the Roger Williams Park Zoo in Providence, Rhode Island, the photographer Shiho Fukada took this picture of a timber rattlesnake that was bred for Mount Zion. #?
