Scientists have always been fascinated by salamanders. They don’t just grow from egg to adult the way mammals or reptiles do. They have several stages, from egg to larva to adult, and in any given species, they may skip a stage, change whether they live in water or on land, grow lungs or stick with gills. Some absorb oxygen through their skin, and skip both lungs and gills. But in the U.S., salamanders may be in danger. In 2013, scientists discovered that a fungus commonly known as Bsal was attacking salamanders in Europe. Now, @usgs is monitoring vulnerable salamander populations to catch any early signs of a deadly fungal infection. @chriscappyphoto captured Adrianne Brand, a wildlife biologist with the @usgs’s Amphibian Research and Monitoring Initiative, taking samples at Warner Pond in Newtown, Connecticut.
