The museum opened in the Molenbeek neighborhood a few weeks after the Brussels attacks, which paralyzed a city already reeling from revelations that some of the deadliest terror attacks in Europe had been conducted by homegrown extremists, many from Molenbeek. @mimamuseum officials wondered whether art lovers would venture across the Charleroi canal into the heavily Muslim and immigrant neighborhood to view what it calls “culture 2.0” — art from subcultures such as tattooing, graffiti, surfing and skateboarding. But they needn’t have worried. On the weekend the museum opened, 4,000 people visited, and the line to get in snaked along the waterfront. Since then, @mimamuseum’s founders have taken steps to attract more young people from the neighborhood by forming alliances with schools and creating a cultural exchange with the nearby Brussels Boxing Academy.
