The Mekong Delta, Vietnam’s premier rice growing region, is going through its worst drought since French colonial administrators began recording statistics in 1926. Scientists say that the increasingly dramatic effect of El Niño is the main reason for crop failures in the delta. But it’s not the only one. The Communist government’s insistence that farmers grow 3 rice crops a year, instead of the traditional 1 or 2, has depleted the soil of nutrients, exacerbating the impact of the drought, they say. Salt is also posing a major problem. Water from the sea is invading the perilously low Mekong River and sweeping saline water farther up the delta than ever before. Huynh Anh Dung, 34, pictured at his family farm in Soc Trang Province, decided to forsake a 3rd crop this year. His rice crop failed in February because of salty water, and he didn't think it made sense to try again.
