Afghan workers traveling to harvest opium lined up to be searched at a checkpoint operated by the Afghan National Police. Afghanistan produces 90% of the world’s heroin, more than two-thirds of which comes from opium poppies in Helmand Province. This year’s first poppy harvest season has just begun, and with no government efforts to eradicate the poppy fields, millions of dollars are at stake — leaving dishonest officials and the Taliban to fight it out. The Taliban directly impose taxes on the crop; some government officials do, too, or more often solicit bribes and look the other way. @adamfergusonphoto took this photo while on assignment in Helmand. #nytweekender
