Lunchtime at an Islamic religious school in Lashkar Gah, the capital city of Afghanistan’s Helmand Province. The school — which has 990 students between the ages of 7 and 19, mostly from outside of Lashkar Gah — was one of @adamfergusonphoto’s stops during an assignment in Helmand Province, the world capital of opium and heroin production. This year, unlike in previous years, there will be no serious efforts to eradicate the opium crop in Helmand. With the Taliban in full control of 5 of Helmand’s 14 districts, and more than half of its territory, it just wouldn’t be possible. This #nytweekender, we’ll be sharing more scenes that @adamfergusonphoto captured while on assignment in #HelmandProvince, the world capital of opium and heroin production and the deadliest province in Afghanistan.
