An #aerial view of the fertile lands off the Helmand River as they turn to desert near Lashkar Gah in Afghanistan’s Helmand Province. Poppy fields in this southwestern region produce 90% of the world’s supply of heroin and opium. But this year, unlike in previous years, there will be no serious efforts to eradicate the opium crop. The Taliban control too much of the area where it’s grown. Maj. Gen. Abdul Jabar Qahraman has been given the task of fixing the situation. The problem, he says, is that too many combatants have a financial stake in the continuation of the drug trade and of the war itself. “If I say it’s not that bad, I’d be lying,” the general said. “But if I say it’s overwhelmingly bad, that’d be lying, too. The situation is fragile.” @adamfergusonphoto took photo while on assignment in #Afghanistan. Visit the link in our profile to see more photos. #nytweekender
