Photo by @ljohnphoto for @rippleeffectimages. Judith Ayoo Olier and a group of 85 other women spend their morning hours with their brows baking in the sun and their feet in the mud of a drainage ditch. As part of a local disaster management group, they clear trenches that line roads and fields in the area to decrease the impact of flooding.
Judith has 6 children that she was unable to feed so when, on a recent trip to market, she saw others flinging mud and brush from the ditch, she inquired about a job. In exchange for their labor, each person receives a ration of corn, grain, and cooking oil.

Dr. Phillip Raburu, an agronomist and social welfare expert, created the Food for Work Project in rural areas of Kenya to help locals become less dependent upon government aid. Raburu noticed that development work such as this tends to draw mostly women, given their strong yearning to provide for their children, each other, and their community.
