Photo by Jeff Gusky @hiddenwwi | These ghostly statues are said to stand guard over the more than 40,000 German soldiers buried here at Langemark Cemetery in rural Belgium, not far from Ypres. There is a somberness to this place. It’s as if the unimaginable horror of war lingers in the air. Close by these statues is a mass grave with the remains of nearly 25,000 German soldiers.
