On this International Day of Action for #Rivers, I would like to salute the grass roots activists, non-profits, dedicated individuals and everyone who works to protect rivers around the world; #clean, #free-flowing water is the life blood of our planet and increasingly important in a warming world. This photo celebrates a success to save the Rio Baker, a wild, un-dammed river in the remote, spectacular Aysén region of Chilean #Patagonia from a series of dams and hydro-electric projects - a massive dam was planned to be built on this very spot, at the Baker’s #confluence with the Rio Nef. After a decade of struggle, the HidroAysén project was finally defeated by a broad coalition of grass roots activists, local and international organizations including Patagonia Sin Represas, Conservación Patagonica, International Rivers and finally by the collective voice of the Chilean people, who came out onto the streets by the thousands to keep the Baker wild and free-flowing. Unfortunately, other rivers in Patagonia are still threatened by dams and other development, so the struggle continues.
