The best advice I ever got for taking pictures of people in a foreign country was to learn a bit of the language. When I first asked this old Nepali farmer about a portrait, for example, he shook his head and turned away. But we were stuck together in a crude shelter, waiting out a monsoon downpour, and had to suffer each other's company anyway. I'd taught myself just enough Nepali for small talk, so I asked him "Kina?" [why?] and he slowly warmed up to a conversation. "I'm so old and I'm not wearing my photo clothes," he answered. "You should be looking for pretty girls!" I laughed and we subsequently chatted for at least half an hour about simple things, sometimes in sign language. When the shower finally abated he pointed again to my camera and asked "if you take two would you send me one?" Two years later I delivered his copy in person. #portraits #people
