British and German troops were engaged in close combat. Front line trenches were separated from one another by as little as 15 feet. Here in the Belgian village of Hooge, German troops poured streams of fire onto British soldiers on July 30, 1915. So often, beauty masks the history of unimaginable horror on the Western Front.
