Photo by: @bethjwald/@thephotosociety A year ago today, I had the great fortune to be with two giants of conservation, wildlife biologist Dr. George Schaller and wildlands philanthropist Doug Tompkins, and took this photo on a hike through a majestic #alerce grove in #Pumalin Park, in the coastal #rainforest of southern Chile, the first of many of Doug Tompkins #conservation initiatives in #Chile and Argentina. Alerces (Fitzroy cupressoides) are majestic #conifers that live for thousands of years, and are the largest #tree species in South America. Like the redwoods of the northern hemisphere, alerces were logged almost to extinction over the last century. The Pumalin Park project began in 1991 when Tompkins purchased a 42,000 acre farm called #Reñihue on a fjord south of Puerto Montt - the project now protects over 700,000 acres of #temperate rainforest and is a designated Nature Sanctuary owned and run by a Chilean foundation, Fundacion Pumalin. Pumalin is just one part of 2.2 million acres of wilderness that Doug and his wife and partner Kris Tompkins have protected in Chile and Argentina; they have also been instrumental in the creation of 5 national parks, saving wild rivers and restoring native habitats and wildlife. Doug died on Dec 8, 2015 in a kayaking accident in Chile and is being honored this weekend for his legacy, vision and inspiration to work for protection of wild lands and creatures. http://www.parquepumalin.cl/ http://www.tompkinsconservation.org #tompkinsconservation #wildlandsphilanthropy #dougtompkins #georgeschaller #fitzroycupressoides #pumalinpark #parquepumalin #loslagos #palena #nature #naturaleza #fundacionpumalin
