When perched on the ground, brown #pelicans look almost prehistoric, seemingly too ungainly to fly. Once airborne, however, they glide almost effortlessly, often soaring for hundreds of feet just inches above the water, propelled only by occasional flaps of their powerful wings. Remarkably, these remarkable #birds (and also eagles) nearly went extinct in the 1960’s and ’70’s because DDT and other pesticides weakened the shells of their eggs, which pelicans stand upon to incubate. Once these chemicals were banned, however, populations have rebounded and once again they soar in squadrons along the coast, sometimes diving headfirst for fish from elevations up to 100 feet above the water. They hit the surface with enough impact to stun their prey, then scoop up as much as three pounds of fish and water in the stretchy pouches of their lower beaks. Incredible! #wildlife #conservation #California #birds
