Photo by Jeff Gusky @hiddenwwi | Tragedy and beauty are ironically often found in the same place. This is a WWI-era rail tunnel that courses beneath one of the large forts that circle the French city of Verdun.

About 1,000 meters long, this tunnel was being used as a troop shelter, first aid post and ammunitions dump and it was filled with French soldiers. In September, 1916, a huge explosion rocked the tunnel when sparks from a kitchen area ignited ammunition stored nearby. Over 500 soldiers were killed in a fiery inferno. Even now, to be deep inside this tunnel is quite eerie.
