Photo by Jeff Gusky @hiddenwwi | Original British front line trench in Sanctuary Wood near Ypres, Belgium. After the war, the farmer who owned this land decided to preserve the trenches that passed through his land in the state which they were left when the fighting stopped. The land has remained in the same family for four generations.

Historians argue that WWI has a more profound affect on our lives than any war since. But because the way we remember WWI is through old photographs and silent films, the war itself seems ancient and irrelevant to our lives. In fact it was a modern war. And the soldiers who fought WWI were modern people.

There is nothing abstract or imaginary about present-day traces of WWI like this trench. They make it real.
