Photo by Jeff Gusky @hiddenwwi | This large Canadian Maple Leaf was carved a century ago by a Canadian WWI soldier in the underground city at Arras in Northern France. Though the Maple Leaf was not Canada’s official symbol until 1965, it was the symbol of the Canadian Expeditionary Forces during WWI and thus an expression of pride for Canadian soldiers serving on the Western Front.

This photograph was taken in a large underground city part of which is open to the public as the Wellington Caves. It is one of the most impressive WWI tourist attractions on the Western Front and has a degree of authenticity and solemnity that is not “touristy”. I can highly recommend a visit to the Wellington Caves. It is the one place open to the public that will truly give you a sense of the importance of underground cities during WWI.

Well over 400,000 Canadian troops fought on the Western Front. Nearly 60,000 Canadians troops lost their lives in WWI.
