Photo by Jeff Gusky @hiddenwwi | World War I brought soldiers from all over the world to the Western Front in France. This photograph depicts a carving in a large underground city deep beneath the earth’s surface by two soldiers who describe themselves as New Zealand Maori. The Maori are the aboriginal people of New Zealand. “S. Isaac” was Salomon Isaac, serial number 16/1033 from Tautu, Aitutaki Island, (part of the Cook Islands archipelago) located in the blue waters of the South Pacific. Beneath the inscription by Private Isaac is another inscription by Private Angene from Avarua, Rarotonga Island, also part of the Cook Islands. Maori soldiers were recruited as experts in tunneling and in this location helped expand the underground space existing before the war to a larger space which, at its peak, accommodated 24,000 Commonwealth troops.
In the course of exploring the Western Front, I’ve had the privilege of photographing WWI soldiers’ inscriptions from many places including Buenos Aires, Argentina, Bombay, India, Durban, South Africa, China, Poland and Hungary.
