On May 16 this year, Dean, a 43-year-old professional climber and jumper, and Graham Hunt, 29, his apprentice and flying partner, disappeared after they jumped from Taft Point, 3,000 feet above a famous green valley. BASE jumping is illegal in U.S. national parks. But that doesn't keep people from surreptitiously doing it, at the risk of being caught, especially in #Yosemite, where some believe the sheer cliffs make it the best place on the planet to do it. @nytimessports tells the story of a jump that ended in confusion, hope and despair.
