“One thinks of Lear as rather towering, a kind of oak,” said Edward Petherbridge. “I’m more a sort of birch.” Eight years ago, the English actor flew to New Zealand to play King Lear. But shortly after rehearsals began, he had a transient ischemic attack, or a mini-stroke, and had to drop out. Beginning on Tuesday, he’s doing Lear again, this time in New York. But this time, it’s not quite as #Shakespeare intended. The play, “My Perfect Mind,” takes its title from a line in “Lear,” in which the king frets, “I fear I am not in my perfect mind.” It's a two-actor show about Edward's life — in other words, a play about not playing King Lear.
