Photo by Jeff Gusky @hiddenwwi | During the Spring of 1918, thousands of American WWI troops from New England’s Yankee Division lived in this and nearby underground cities. They carved this life-sized sculpture of an American Indian, perhaps drawing inspiration and courage from the warrior instincts and fearlessness in battle for which American Indians are known. Now in complete darkness, they left behind hundreds of inscriptions and magnificent works of art.

Protecting this and other cultural treasures in underground cities along the Western Front from vandalism and theft is one of my highest priorities. It’s surreal that such treasures have survived for a century yet remain so vulnerable to harm. I never reveal the locations of these underground places unless their entrances are secured against theft and vandalism.
