Photo by Jeff Gusky @hiddenwwi | Former troop barracks inside Fort de Troyon, one of the large French forts which formed a defensive ring around Verdun during WWI. In September, 1914, 10,000 German troops laid siege to the fort. During 6 days of heavy bombardment, 450 French soldiers fought valiantly and would not surrender. Fort de Troyon never fell to the Germans and prevented the German army from circling Verdun and cutting off supply lines to the Verdun battlefield.
The cross in this photograph marks the spot where French soldiers were killed during the siege when a powerful German shell collapsed the roof of the barracks.
Fort de Troyon is one of several of the original forts of Verdun that are now open to the public.
