Met this beautiful little fellow at Upper Peirce Reservoir yesterday evening. It was lying perfectly still in the middle of the road, head in the air. I actually walked past without seeing it, but my sharp-eyed SOs spotted it. I went right up close to take some photos. My SOs were very nervous, but the snake did not mind at all!
I asked what species this was. I thought Subaraj (who is a snake expert) might know, but he was away. But NParks tells me it is a Black-headed Collared Snake (Sibynophis melanocephalus), an endangered species, non-venomous and seldom encountered because of its shy nature.
