This is one of the scariest pictures I have ever taken. A day earlier we had climbed the first ascent of massive Shipton’s Arch in the harsh and arid Kara Tagh #Mountains on the edge of the Taklimakan #Desert near #Kashgar (Kashi) in #Xinjiang Province, far-western #China. Here, our team has just rappelled into a fearsome, unexplored slot canyon that drained to the other side of the range. The crumbly cobblestone rock was some of the worst I have ever touched and even wind zephyrs could dislodge fist-sized missiles that ricocheted and echoed around us. The canyon got steeper and steeper and we had already pulled our ropes and could not turn back. It also got so narrow that we could barely squeeze through and I feared we would be stranded. AND, if it started to rain, the whole canyon would flash flood, leaving our skeletons hydraulically crushed. I kissed the ground when we finally reached the other side. Shot on assignment for Nat Geo Magazine. #climbing #fear #naturalbridge #shiptonsarch #taklimakan #canyoneering
