Photo by: @hiddenwwi | Found intact about 20 years ago at Butte de Vauquois in the Meuse-Argonne region of France, this original WWI railway and tunnel descends at a steep angle in the direction of the German front line. Rail cars transported rock and dirt to the surface as soldiers dug offensive tunnels deep underground and placed large quantities of dynamite directly beneath the German front line. The same electrical system used a century ago is in use today.

The surface of Butte de Vauquois now looks like a moonscape with a series huge mine craters, one next to another, that extend across the entire top of the butte. A quaint French village with its own church once existed here before WWI. Pictures of the village are all that remain.
The association of dedicated volunteers with manages Butte de Vauquois permitted me to photograph this amazing place at night. I was there by myself. It was eerily quiet...so much so that you could here a pin drop. One can only imagine the sounds, sights and smells here a hundred years ago when soldiers were fighting desperate battles to drive their German adversaries from the butte. Vauquois is located in proximity to the historic town of Sainte-Menehould, France.
