Photo: @hiddenwwi | This peaceful scene is ground zero for modern mass destruction. It’s like Hiroshima and Nagasaki yet it’s unmarked and its significance is unknown except to a small number of scholars and battlefield historians. The first use of poison gas in modern warfare occurred here, just north of Ypres, Belgium, on April 22, 1915. The dirt lane marks the precise location of the original French front line trench where French soldiers died en masse when Germans soldiers, positioned by the farm house on
the left, released the gas.
This is a place that touches me, not only for what it represents historically but because it was the beginning of a multi-year project that is still ongoing. I had no idea what I would stumble upon just 5 months after this image was captured. Photographed at the end of November, 2011, it was one of the first of several thousand images in the Hidden World of WWI series. It was so windy on the day this photograph was taken that the tripod, and a brand new camera body and lens, blew over landing in thick mud. Thank goodness the mud was soft!
