Photo by #MoisesSaman. Thousands of Kurds gather to celebrate #Newroz in #Cizre, a restive city in southeastern #Turkey near the border with #Iraq. The #PKK enjoys high levels of support in Cizre, and during the 1990s this city was the site of frequent clashes between militants and Turkish security forces.
Recently, a pro-PKK armed youth group known as the #YDG-H has grown especially strong in Cizre, and has clashed there with Turkish security forces and Islamist-aligned #Kurds. Since last December, a number of young people have been shot dead. Evidence has emerged suggesting that Turkish security forces were responsible for at least two of those deaths, both children (#UmitKurt , reportedly 14, and #NihatKazanhan , reportedly 12).
