I will be posting Instagrams from southeast Turkey, where I have been over the past week photographing #Newroz celebrations in various Kurdish towns with the support of a grant from the Magnum Foundation. I am working on a long-term project about the revived sense of transnational Kurdish identity (in Iraq, Syria, Turkey and Iran).
This photo was taken today in Diyarbakir, where hundreds of thousands of Kurds came out to celebrate Newroz and to listen to a historic political message. Abdullah #Ocalan, the jailed leader of the rebel group, the Kurdistan Worker’s Party (PKK), delivered a Newroz letter, read out to the crowd through intermediaries, in which he renewed his call for the #PKK to convene a congress to discuss ending the group’s military campaign inside of Turkey. But even if the PKK heeds Ocalan’s call, the movement will remain an active armed group in Iraq and Syria, where it has been fighting the #IslamicState. The boy pictured on the right of this photo was a PKK fighter killed in Kobani, Syria. In the crowd to the left, many people fly the flags of the YPG and YPJ (the PKK armed branch in Syria, and its all-female counterpart, respectively).
