Photo by #MoisesSaman – The fading portrait of Vedat Encu, a young #Kurdish boy, lies atop his grave in #Roboski, a Turkish Kurdish village near the mountains that separate northern Iraq and southeastern Turkey. In 2011, Turkish military F-16 jets bombed a group of Kurdish villagers smuggling tea, fuel and sugar on mules from Iraqi Kurdistan back into Turkey. The airstrike killed 34 villagers, 17 of them children. The Turkish government claims the strike was an “operational accident”, based on mistaken intelligence that the smugglers were PKK fighters. Many Kurds still point to the Roboski incident as evidence that the Turkish state views all Kurds, and not only the PKK, through a terrorism lens.
