A warm welcome from German Chancellor #AngelaMerkel on a very wintry and snowy day!

A particular pleasure to be in #Germany on the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between our two countries, the 50th anniversary of Singapore’s independence, and the 25th anniversary of German reunification.

Had a lively lunch discussion with Chancellor Merkel yesterday about our bilateral relations and cooperation – in trade, education and research, to name a few. We also exchanged views on common challenges and strategic issues.

Appreciate the support from Germany for the EU-Singapore Free Trade Agreement (EUSFTA). Germany is Singapore’s largest trading partner in the EU and #Singapore is Germany’s largest trading partner in ASEAN.

For the rest of the day I met German ministers, was interviewed by the Süddeutsche Zeitung, signed a condolence book for the former Federal President Dr Richard von Weizsäcker, and attended a dinner at The Körber Foundation.

Launched the Singapore Economic Ambassador Programme for the German Mittelstand today, and will be heading to Madrid soon.

I have also been reminded that today is the first day of spring according to the lunar calendar. Keep happy and healthy today as traditionally this will mark how you do the rest of the year. ? – LHL
