Photo: @andreabruce | After a day of heavy climbing on volcano Acatenango, local indigenous workers take a rest. Guatemala's indigenous communities make up approximately 40%of the total population. In the 1960s, indigenous social movements demanding land and fair wages were met with a powerful government response. The movements reached a head in the 1980s with a counter-insurgency campaign led by General Rios Montt resulting in over 200,000 deaths, 200,000 refugees, and a million internally displaced people. @thephotosociety @noorimages #guatemala #indigenous
