Photo by @ChrisBickford for @National Geographic Travel. The famous wishing-tree of Killary Harbour, overlooking Ireland's onlynatural fjord. Traditionally wishing-ties were placed on blackthorn trees as gifts to the Faeries during the weeks leading up to the spring festival of Beltaine; all other times of the year the trees were carefully avoided out of deference towards--and fear of--the wee folk who were thought to live beneath them. In modern times, when taboos associated with the Faeries have loosened and visitors from around the world wish to participate in Irish customs, the ritual has become an unofficial year-round tradition. If you happen to pass by this or any other wishing-tree in Ireland and would like to tie a wish around one of its branches, just do the locals and the Faeries a favor and make sure that your ribbon is biodegradable. Anyway, your wish won't come true until it falls off of the tree and finds its way to the faery rath below. Or so they say. Here's to wishing you all a holiday season full of blessings, good cheer, and thoughtful resolutions for the year to come. #wishingtree #killary #connnemara #ireland @NatGeoCreative
