Photo by @ChrisBickford. A view from Cortina d'Ampezzo in the Dolomite mountains of northeast Italy. Though geographically an extension of the Alps, the Dolomites have been a part of the Veneto region of Northeast Italy for over a thousand years, and remain so into the present day. It was wood from the forests of the Dolomites that built the foundation of pilings that holds up the island kingdom of Venice; and the overland routes across her passes formed an integral--and sometimes treacherous--segment of the great medieval trade route that stretched from Northwestern Europe all the way to China and Mongolia. The ship that bore Marco Polo away from his home in Venice on his epic journey to China and Mongolia--an adventure that ultimately exposed Europe to the wonders and riches of the East--was most likely built from timbers cut in these forests and then floated downriver to the shipyards of the Venetian lagoon. Strange to ponder the instrumental role the once-impenetrable forests of Europe played in providing the raw materials for the sailing vessels with which the small nation-states of Europe conquered the world.
