This is a frozen slice of human brain. Scientist Allan Jones uses donated brains to make an elaborate map of exactly what goes on inside our heads. A single brain provides a thousand samples to analyze, helping researchers locate the brain’s 25,000 genes. Allan sees the brain as a new frontier, “an unexplored, undiscovered continent.” He hopes that mapping the brain will improve our drugs and our understanding of mental health disorders like schizophrenia.
