Photographer Ruddy Roye grew up in Jamaica, where he says that race wasn’t an issue—but class was. When he moved to the United States, he was surprised to find the color of his skin mattered. He turned to photography to work out his reaction, telling stories of unseen people in his neighborhood. Carmen, above, is a resident of a nearby psychiatric ward, and Ruddy hopes to show the world that she has a story. She is someone’s daughter, and her life is just as valuable as any other. Thanks to @Instagram, he says, “For the first time in my life, I could bring my world of invisibility to an audience that had no editors.” Follow him here: @ruddyroye
