The morning after I made this image was the deadliest day in Mt Everest History. A group of sherpa were bottlenecked below a long ladder leading to camp 1 when a massive avalanche swept over them. At least a dozen have perished. I personally saw 1/2 a dozen bodies and 2 survivors transferred from high altitude helicopters to a military helicopter in Pheriche. On the trek down today we were passed by a constant trickle of monks headed up the Khumbu to attend to the funerals of these brave men. The valley is devastated by this loss. We forget sometimes how dangerous high altitude mountaineering is. On Everest the bulk of that danger falls on the Sherpa.
