Yesterday an avalanche swept through the #Khumbu icefall, killing at least 12 Sherpas in the most dreaded and dangerous section of the main climbing route up #MountEverest - the worst single accident in the mountain's history. In light of Jon Krakauer's book, "Into Thin Air" and the fact that most of these hardy climbers are paid only about $25 a day for one of the riskiest jobs on earth, it is easy to leap to conclusions about the tragic frivolity of inexperienced, but rich westerners dropping $40,000 to be dragged to the summit for whatever motivation. But that is an over-simplification. Compared to the average income in #Nepal or numerous other third world countries, $25 a day (and more if they are climbing higher) is a small fortune that balances great risk with an ability to support families, educate children, and perhaps even start small businesses in a landscape like Switzerland, where tourism can bring riches. It's a conundrum, or as they say in Nepal, kay garnay? (what to do?) My heart goes out to their wives, children and friends. (Important note: "Sherpa" does not mean "guide." It is actually the name of an ethnic group that migrated from Tibet to the Everest region about 400 years ago and the word means "People of the East.")
