With bright yellow beaks and all white feathers, great egrets are a beauty in the North American wetlands. These birds are not small either, with a wingspan as long as 57 inches and a height as tall as 40 inches. During mating season great egrets will become more “attractive” and produce a patch of neon green skin on their faces as well as grow long, soft feathers on their backs. During migration season, the great egret is often the first species to nest in North America allowing them to settle in the best location. With their adept sensitivity to changes in climate, great egrets can even help warn scientists about natural disasters. However, migratory bird populations are dropping by 80-90%. Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center education intern, Jordan Rutter, is on Mad Island, Texas with local students observing migratory birds and teaching them about the species they see. #WeSaveSpecies
