The yellow-crowned night-heron can be found year round in South America, but also migrates to the southern coast of the United States. Found in the wetlands, these nocturnal birds eat crustaceans such as crab and crayfish. At times these birds can even be found scavenging for lizards, snakes, mice or small rabbits. Yellow-crowned night-herons are not only spotted in the water but also high amongst the trees with nests sometimes as high 60 feet. The female will guard the nest while the male collects materials, making nesting a team effort.

Yellow-crowned night-herons are one of the many birds Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center’s education intern Jordan Rutter is observing with local schools at Mad Island, Tx. As migratory bird populations have dropped by 80-90%, it is critical to educate our next generation of conservationists about the role they play in global biodiversity. At our program in Mad Island, students are challenged to be mindful of various bird species and the environment around them. #WeSaveSpecies
