Today the first lady visited the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding in China. The National Conference on Giant Panda Protection and Management is hosted in Chengdu annually, and Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute scientists studying the health, reproduction and ecology of pandas attend along with many other panda scientists from around the world. Much of the collaboration between SCBI scientists and Chinese scientists happens at a different research facility from the Chengdu Research Base — the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda at Wolong in Sichuan Province. Currently, Smithsonian scientists and Chinese scientists in Wolong are working together to better understand diseases and parasites in giant pandas. That information will be useful as Chinese scientists reintroduce giant pandas to the wild. The Smithsonian’s National Zoo highly values its relationship with Wolong and it is this institution that Bao Bao will travel to when she is four years old. Mrs. Obama’s trip is a reminder of the importance of global collaboration in facing global challenges. International efforts, like our collaboration with Chinese scientists, helps determine the best conservation methods for animals all over the world. These photos were taken in China, as part of a research project utilizing motion-activated camera-traps to photograph pandas in the wild. #WeSaveSpecies #GlobalSolution @ミシェル・オバマ
