Staff from the Smithsonian’s Migratory Bird Center are currently in Nicaragua educating students about migratory birds as part of “Bridging the Americas.” Bridging the Americas is an environmental education program that partners classes in grades 3 through 8 in Maryland, Virginia, Washington, DC, New Hampshire and Vermont with classes in Latin America and the Caribbean. The paired classes share information through letters, art work, photos and other creative material about the migratory birds that breed in the U.S. during the spring and fly south to Latin America for the winter. There is no doubt that migratory birds play a vital role in the environment and in our lives. They control insect population which helps protect the forests. Many plants depend on these birds for seed dispersal and pollination. Most importantly, because of their sensitivity to changes in climate scientists rely on migratory birds to warn us of natural disasters and environmental dangers. Unfortunately, due to climate change the numbers of migratory birds have dropped by 80-90%. The first lady’s trip to China reminds us how interconnected we are and in order to find solutions to global challenges, we need global collaboration. Mrs. Obama, along with the Smithsonian’s National Zoo, also understands the power of educating youth. The National Zoo is happy to encourage the next generation of young conservationists and connect students around the globe in order to spark engagement about the environment. #wesavespecies @michelleobama
