Spring is in the air and migratory birds are flying to their summer destinations. After hundreds of miles of non-stop flying the state of Texas provides a resting point for many of these birds to refuel. Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center intern Jordan Rutter is in Mad Island, Texas where she is educating local students about migratory birds and helping them identify birds in the area. One of the birds that Jordan has spotted is the scissor-tailed flycatcher. As its name suggests, the scissor-tail flycatcher uses its fork-shaped tail to trap insects with sharp twists in the air. Migrating from Central America and Mexico, these birds settle for the summer off the Southern Great Plains of the United States or off the coast of South Texas. When migrating back south for the winter scissor-tail flycatchers truly stick together and can be seen in flocks of up to 1,000.
SMBC’s program demonstrates to students that the environment, and these birds’ homes, is not separate from us but in fact right in our backyard. The SMBC bird banding center is at The Nature Conservancy’s Clive Runnells family Mad Island Marsh Preserve. #WeSaveSpecies
