These four individuals represent one of the world’s most endangered tortoise species - the ploughshare tortoise. Once widespread, these tortoises are now restricted to the Baly Bay National Park in northwestern Madagascar. The main cause of their decline? Habitat loss due to burning, and more recently, the illegal wildlife trade. Despite in-country conservation efforts, the ploughshare tortoise is now considered “functionally extinct”, with only a few individuals remaining in the wild. However, hope for the species remains through continued conservation efforts via captive breeding programs. Photo taken @zooatl.
