This December, we’re counting down to the anniversary of the Endangered Species Act on December 28th. Each day, we’ll feature a different species protected by this act so you can learn more about their stories.

First up is the gharial. The gharial is one of the most critically endangered crocodilian species in the world. Historically the gharial's range spanned rivers of Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Myanmar, Nepal and Pakistan. Today, only small, isolated populations remain in Nepal and northern India. When the species came dangerously close to extinction in the 1970s, the government of India gave the gharial full legal protection and many conservation groups began breeding and reintroduction programs, but despite these efforts, the species’ struggle to rebound is still ongoing. As human populations have expanded, habitat loss and alteration, unsustainable fishing practices, and illegal hunting for gharial eggs and body parts have continued to put pressure on an already fragile population.
