Kagus like this duo @houstonzoo are rare, flightless birds that call the forests of New Caledonia home. Those wings may seem oversized for a bird that doesn’t fly, but they serve an important role. When a potential predator is nearby, parents will flap their fully opened wings on the ground, as if injured, to turn attention away from their chick.

This December, we’re counting down to the anniversary of the Endangered Species Act on December 28th. Each day, we’ll feature a different species protected by this act so you can learn more about their stories.
